ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service based in Geneva, Switzerland, that was created in 2013. Unlike other popular email services such as Gmail and Outlook.com, ProtonMail uses client-side encryption to safeguard email content and user data before they are delivered to ProtonMail servers. A webmail client, the Tor network, or dedicated iOS and Android apps can all be used to access the service. ProtonMail is managed by Proton Technologies AG, a corporation situated in the Canton of Geneva. ProtonVPN, a VPN service, is also run by the firm. ProtonMail got its start thanks to a crowdsourcing effort. The service is supported by optional paid services, despite the fact that the initial account setup is free. ProtonMail, which was previously exclusively accessible by invitation, became open to the general public in March 2016. ProtonMail has over 2 million subscribers in 2017, and by September 2018, it had grown to over 5 million, 20 million by the end of 2019, and over 50 million by 2020.
