"Online courses"

What do you like best?

Intuitive user-interface and easily accessible

What do you dislike?

It may be a setting from the institution using Canvas, but it would be nice to have longer access to course files on the site once the course ends.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Syncing Canvas messages to your personal inbox ensures you don't miss any new announcements or notifications from your courses.

"Great workflow documentation and alert website"

What do you like best?

I like the notification system where I know what other people are doing. It is useful to see when something new is posted and the notification settings can be adjusted to show only what I'm interested in.

What do you dislike?

It can be a bit cluttered at times with so many different projects and that can make it difficult to navigate at first.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is useful for having people read documentation and then quizzing them on it. Can also be used to grade the quizzes.

"As a student I use canvas to access all my educational resources"

What do you like best?

Canvas is very easy to navigate and customizable. From both the student and instructor side there are different ways to link to information and media options.

What do you dislike?

Canvas can be confusing to use sometimes and there can be lots of connectivity issues that create problems when canvas is used for final exams and such.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Be sure to make the navigation easy and intuitive for the users.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Being able to access educational resources online is great because it minimizes the chance of losing important papers or notes. This also helps with the environment because I use canvas in conjunction with my ipad and have gone completely paperless for my education.

"Good LMS. It could be better."

What do you like best?

The ease to use. All the features are modular, so you can integrate most of the instructional design and activities in an intuitive way. These are the main differences with other LMS systems like Moodle (Open Source), Blackboard or Sakai (both paid).

The UI is similar with a blogging platform to write and publish contents in text or video. The platform give the opportunity to integrate third-party services like Plagiarism Chekers (like Unicheck) and Google Drive, for example.

There are options to make groups to grade assignments and moderate forums. The students also have the opportunity to make pair grading with rubrics provided by the teachers.

Most of the elements of the platform can be imported or exported to and from other LMS platforms, in order to use them inside Canvas.

What do you dislike?

There are some features that are not easy to do and integrate. Rubrics, for example, take a lot of time to design and make to work for you. Nevertheless there are some caveats to those handicaps with Chrome extensions and scripts, but you have to make a deep research in Canvas forums in order to find your solutions. It could be better to upload lessons from other formats, like Microsoft Word, for example. The inbox mail feature sometimes in confusing with direct messages and the Announcements section.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Although this platform is a kind of intuitive, there is a medium level learning curve for new users. You have to take some type of induction to use it, or you have to read a lot in forums and tutorials in order to reap all the benefits of this LMS platform.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I use it in to teach an entire online program with a local University. I had previous experience with Google Classroom that is similar in structure but less powerful that Canvas. Canvas saves a lot of time of instructional design, planning, making contents and grading. The learning curve is lesser that other LMS, and the results are faster. For the average instructor, these are obvious advantages to prepare the learning experiences and teach straight. But, for advanced users, Canvas can disappoint you because sometimes there is not enough flexibility to do the things on your way, or there are no options to re use all the elements that you want to use in the way you think. It is a matter of usability.

"Canvas: A Necessity for Teachers and Students Alike"

What do you like best?

Canvas is more detailed than its competitors, such as Blackboard. Teachers have the ability to customize their class page for student viewing. It also allows the option for sending reminders as well.

What do you dislike?

Some of its features are difficult to figure out for new users. Also, its audio feature almost always has had bugs, so I've had my students use a different software for recording things.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Canvas allows for students to keep up to date with their grades and assignments online while teachers can easily post class material.

"Canvas - Great to connect with Professors & School"

What do you like best?

Canvas is a great platform to connect you with your professors, classmates, assignments and grades. I primarily use this website with CSUCI and have used it for the past 3 years. I enjoy being able to see what assignments are due in the future so I can plan my schedule accordingly. It is great to use for emailing with other students as well as professors. I also really appreciate it when professors use this website for placing grades in and being able to project where you will be when assignments are turned in.

What do you dislike?

The only downside to Canvas is some of my professors have said they don't receive the emails sent and I am not sure if that is due to the website or another issue.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Canvas impacts my work in a positive way because I can plan my life around my school work, be able to project what my grade(s) will look like which in turn assists me with how well I need to do on my midterms, projects and final exams. It is wonderful!

"Does Everything, but Not User-Friendly"

What do you like best?

Canvas has been a great tool for my students. As a district we moved from using Google Classroom to Canvas. It was a difficult transition at first, but with training, teachers have found how to use it best for their students. Canvas is a one-stop shop for my middle school students. I can even assign and grade a test all within Canvas.

What do you dislike?

On the administrator side, Canvas can be difficult to navigate at first. Even with some training, and playing around, there is still so much I do not know how to do. Training with Canvas can be very overwhelming as well, especially when initially setting up as an administrator.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you are going to implement Canvas, make sure you give your employees a training in how to set-up and use it. Otherwise, the buy-in to switch to Canvas with employees can be difficult.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Canvas is giving us a way to communicate with students and parents all in one secure place. Once acclimated with the site more, I will be able to transfer lessons, quizzes, pages, and more to my class next year and eliminate restarting every year.

"always seamless"

What do you like best?

Canvas is incredibly easy to navigate. The side bar gives simple access to everything you are needing. Also, the calendar that autopopulates keeps me on top of assignments.

What do you dislike?

Website has frozen during critical time like during a quiz.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Allows me to take online classes and modules
