AWS X-Ray

Simplified analysis and debugging production distributed applications
(14 Ratings) Write Review

AWS X-Ray is a platform that helps developers to analyze and debug production and distributed applications, including those that are built using a microservice architecture. The software enables its users to understand how their application and its underlying services are performing to identify and troubleshoot the root cause of performance issues and errors. AWS X-Ray can create a map of services used by the application of the user by tracking the requests. AWS X-Ray is capable of automatically highlighting the errors or bugs that might occur in the application code of the user by monitoring the response codes for every request made to the software. The software provides users with a set of query APIs which can be used by the user to build their own analysis and visualizations app that uses the data recorded by X-ray. Users can get started with the X-Ray by including the X-Ray language SDK in their application and then install the software agent. The software offers its users a set of APIs, helping them to ingest request data, configuring the service and querying traces.

(Reviewed on 21 December 2018) "AWS X-Ray"

What do you like best?

The best part about using AWS X-Ray for debugging is that it works seamlessly with EC2, Elastic Beanstalk and also with Lambda Functions. It supports applications written in a variety of languages like .NET and Java.

What do you dislike?

Nothing as such. It could eventually support more languages, however, it's already very extensive.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is a really helpful way to identify the main issues due to which an application might be underperforming. it also helps a lot in the process of debugging and diagnosing the issues.

What do you like best?

It is awesome for debugging code and that you can get down to the single part of the code that is buggy

What do you dislike?

Not much that I really dislike. The service does what it promises well

(Reviewed on 24 January 2019) "Optimized Application Insights"

What do you like best?

The best thing about AWS X-Ray is that it allows you to easily debug your applications in the cloud, no more having to grep multiple log files to try to find out what is causing a bug.

What do you dislike?

There's not much that I dislike about AWS X-Ray, it does take some time getting used to their UI navigating around the requests and what not. So I think the thing that I dislike is the learning curve to be proficient at it.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We mainly use it to help us find out why a request is failing or help us to isolate a production bug. We also started to use it to isolate slow running web services and increase the performance of our web services response times.

(Reviewed on 29 December 2018) "Makes Application Debugging so easy"

What do you like best?

I really love the way AWS x-ray makes the entire debugging and application analysis process so easy. Common methods for debugging applications are not that easy and not accessible via the cloud, unlike AWS x-ray. The best part is its integration with EC2 services. It spans across languages and supports a variety of DB as well. The way it finds both errors and performance issues, makes the overall debugging extremely efficient.

What do you dislike?

Just like other debugging tools, sometimes it gives up false positives and false negatives, however, this issue can be handled by manually focusing on the areas which it makes eventually easier to analyze.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Its one of a kind tool, with really nice features all accessible over the cloud. A must try!

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This helps me in analyzing my application's architecture, and also in identifying the key issues which might be responsible for the underperformance of the overall application. Its feature of giving a high-level architecture map diagram based on the metadata is extremely useful for visualizing the applications.

Sometimes analysis aren't very accurate as expected. Need little learning of software before integrating or using it.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This works really well, our processes are much easier and smoother.

(Reviewed on 06 November 2018) "Real tracer"

What do you like best?

I like all aspects of AWS X-Ray which includes the time it takes for Lambda to initialize the function, and the various downstream systems it talked to, all nested by under custom subsegments. It even includes the trace of the underneath services, for example the time it took to publish to SNS, which was invoked using the Lambda API.

What do you dislike?

I can not think of anything that I do not like about AWS X-Ray.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Highly recommended to see the performance of Lambda functions.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Triaging Lambda functions and their performance.

(Reviewed on 07 July 2018) "AWS X-Ray: distributed application performance management service "

What do you like best?

AWS X-Ray is a great service that allows the analysis and debugging of your applications through the AWS cloud, it is compatible with microservices and server-based applications which can be difficult to debug by common methods, as well as developer can create maps of your applications where the architecture of your applications is visible so that X-Ray then evaluates the codes generated by user requests and in this way find errors or performance problems, it also includes a development kit for software that captures the API metadata and includes additional drivers for MySQL and PostgreSQL.

What do you dislike?

In spite of the changes that have been made to this service, it still presents errors that, although they are common, are tedious for the user.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

When implementing this service, you must follow the instructions to the letter to avoid errors that may arise due to a bad configuration, either in the console, in the API, etc.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As a web developer, I usually use X-Ray to visualize my applications either during their development or production, making maps that allow me to observe their architecture, their dependencies tree and the best thing is that if my applications present problems I can debug them as well also send data without using programming interfaces.
