Effortless, scalable digital experiences—no coding required
The Funnelback support team is fast to respond to requests that usually involve pointing us to appropriate customization settings or reporting tools. They have also been very responsive when we need configuration changes (we are in shared cloud hosting) or even in making suggestions for handling requests and answering inquiries that come from our content owners.
What I dislike is more about the shared hosting than the product itself. There are some limitations as to when configuration changes can be made and re-crawls can be done. I know this is more about keeping us and the other clients from having performance issues.
As part of the implementation of Funnelback we incorporated our social media data and employee directories into the search results. We are able to include our ITS Support and Service Catalog contents in the index via API calls that would otherwise not be available to our enterprise search. With the Funnelback implementation we have moved much closer toward a truly enterprise search.
The customer service team is top-notch. They offer great advice and have a solid history with other client projects that allows us to make informed decisions on what we need for our own projects. The site search feature they implemented has improved usability for our site by a mile. Users comment on how much easier our site is to navigate with the new search feature. I personally have found the new site search feature has improved my ability to determine what content should be shown more prominently to our users and what content should be deleted. I am able to take the accessibility and QA insights to our users to fix issues in our content as well.
The customization can be overwhelming but once you get the hang of it it's great.
We shopped around and found Funnelback to be the most comprehensive and thorough of all site search vendors out there.
Usability used to be a major issue for us but now the site search allows people to more easily navigate our site. We have over 7000 pages of information and the custom site search lets our clients find what they need faster...and on a phone!
It has all the flexibility to make our search results as robust and complex as what we want but has an easy-to-use "marketing-friendly" interface which makes it simple for our entire staff to manage search results and compliance issues. The idea of search "Collections" has come in handy on multiple occasions.
As the product goes through iterations, we've found there are some releases which remove some of the functionality we've come to rely on. However, we've found that bringing the removed functionality to our Funnelback representative's attention has allowed them to bring that functionality back in the next release.
I think the release and upgrade process could be communicated better in regards to when it is being released and what features/fixes come with each. Right now, we rely on our vendor partner to supply us with the information, nothing comes directly from Funnelback.
Evaluate the different areas of your institution (and third-party apps) you'd like to return results on. The concept of having multiple, separate collections and being able to unify them or display them uniquely in search results is very powerful.
Funnelback was first recommended to our institution as we had some OCR compliance issues. A partner of ours recommended it as it provided an easy-to-use interface which clearly indicated the areas we were not compliant and needed improvement. The accessibility monitoring is in and of itself worth it to purchase this product.
We decided to also implement the search side of the software. Previously utilizing Sharepoint FastSearch, Funnelback is hands-down a superior platform - we didn't realize how cumbersome our search platform was until we saw Funnelback.
The team is really a pleasure to work with. They are friendly and responsive and experts in their field.
I wish all of my vendors were as capable and reliable as the team at Funnelback.
I wholeheartedly recommend the Funnelback team if you are looking for a great customized search experience, search analytics, and help to identify accessibility issues. Their team is very responsive and extremely friendly and supportive. They are on the cutting edge of search technology and constantly working to improve their product. They consistently ask for feedback about how they can make the product better for us, but more than that, they actually implement our ideas when feasible. The implementation costs are hefty for a small shop, but Funnelback was one of the best investments I have made for my campus to date.
They are helping us to provide an in-depth search experience for our users, a critical component for complex higher education communities. They also provide us with great analytic tools for monitoring what content users are looking for and creating better quality web content that is accessible for everyone.
The flexibility. If you can think of it, you can do it in Matrix. From building a JSON backend for our mobile apps to managing thousands of pages, Matrix can do it all.
The installation process has always been something for server admins to do.
Allowing us to build our website very quickly while not having to worry about if what we want to do it possible. We continually benefit from the power of Matrix in our day to day work.
Squiz provide a 'supported' open-source service which not only gives us the security of having someone to contact 24/7 if the site goes down but also comes with a community of users and developers to tap into for further help and enquiry. It supports multiple sites - we currently have 4 on the same instance, including an Intranet) and has an extensive range of features to improve your content management.
Squiz Matrix is a great CMS but without expert knowledge of the CMS it can be costly for development work.
Anyone considering implementing a CMS - contact Squiz for a demo. Being able to see how the product works in practice is as valuable as meeting the team who come with it.
Squiz Matrix has enabled us to streamline our web content management including being able to successfully divulge content editing around the organisation. Knowing the product well has also meant that we have been able to undertake in-house development with ease and reserve time with Squiz on a consultancy level.
The customer service crew is outstanding, constantly making sure my requirements are met and problems are resolved as soon as possible. The user experience is significantly improved by the search options' great degree of customizability and accuracy of their results.
The ramp-up time for internal staff was longer than expected and there were a few issues with gaining access to customized features without incurring additional costs.
The search options have substantially improved our users' overall experience on our website by making it easier and faster for them to discover the information they require.
The product just seems to work with minimal configuration. Being able to make changes to live content improving the user experience immediately.
The difficulty in integrating with other systems. The admin interface needs some work it can be clunky/buggy. Would be useful if it gave hints and tips as you went/during creation of collections etc. Having to do some tasks via the command line. Would to see a useful message explaining why a crawl failed.
Plan your content structure and think about your meta information for your sites/pages.
A consistent experience, and a one stop search to find content you need wherever you are in whatever system. Compared to the google solution I can quickly and easily make changes.

We needed to replace the Google Search Appliance when Google ended that business. We needed a federated site search for a wide range of properties and domains with some fairly significant differences and sophisticated search features (configured faceting, custom UIs, custom thesaurus/term-mapping, etc.). Getting all of this in a single cloud-based solution has been a tremendous improvement both in back-end/content admin and in the end users' experiences.
