LastPass

Forget your passwords as Lastpass remembers it all for you
(672 Ratings) Write Review

Lastpass stores your passwords online and prepopulates them automatically when needed. It stores passwords in encrypted form and lets you access them through various options like its browser extensions, mobile apps or simply via logging in to your Lastpass account by using just one master password. In case the master password is missing, LastPass allows a password hint, pre-set by the user, thereby making access simple and hassle-free. It even supports bookmarklets. Lastpass automates form filling and password generation, along with site-sharing, site logging and two-factor authentication through various methods. This particular feature is not very common with other password management softwares. LastPass also offers an enterprise solution that lets the companies share credentials within and outside the organization without disclosing passwords. Last, but not the least, LastPass even allows offline functionality through its apps which are available for smartphones with iOS, Windows and Android as their operating systems.

LastPass for Business, a convenient tool for maintaining security best practices

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We're currently using it across our organization to assist with secure password management. It's a great tool for sharing common passwords across the company or within a subset of users where needed (e.g. services with single user accounts/testing accounts/etc.). It also has effective monitoring to ensure everyone is using secure passwords (e.g. strength scores) and warns of cases like password re-use. With LastPass we can maintain a high level of security by requiring strong passwords and multi-factor authentication.

Pros and Cons

  • Provides secure password/secure note sharing.
  • Auto-generation and storage of highly secure passwords.
Edit
  • The browser extension can be buggy and will occasionally lock you out.
  • Could be more forthcoming about their own security incidents.

Likelihood to Recommend

Scenarios where LastPass for Business is well suited:
- Small/Medium sized companies looking to enforce a higher standard of security among employees password management. Also for those who need a certain level of auditing to achieve security compliance.
- Cases where you have sensitive security information (e.g. encryption keys) to share across the company or parts of the company.

Scenarios where LastPass for Business is less suited:
- I'm not convinced LastPass for Business would scale well in a larger organization. The user management can be a bit awkward and permissions within LastPass may not be granular enough.

LastPass for Business keeps your accounts secure!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

LastPass for Business is excellent and so easy to use! Gone are the days of continually forgetting passwords, or even worse, having to write them down on a piece of paper that anybody could find. Sharing passwords is easy, and managing who has access to what makes securing all sites and resources a breeze.

Pros and Cons

  • Allows you to easily manage who has access to what platforms.
  • Keeps your passwords safe, and in an easy-to-find place.
Edit
  • Easier to make folders, and have passwords in multiple folders to better share access.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are a business of more than a few people, LastPass for Business is for you. Sending passwords through email, Slack, or text can put your security in jeopardy, and this helps solve that problem.

"Poor User Experience"

What do you like best?

Solid enterprise administrative features, cloud-native, SSO support, MFA support, local-only decryption of user Vaults, and the ability to pair personal and Enterprise accounts.

What do you dislike?

The experience for end users is poor at best. The browser extension is very fragile, and frequently breaks so that users cannot log in without closing all tabs and windows, and fully resetting their browsers. Running as a local browser extension that imitates a webpage, many of the behaviors are unintuitive (such as a page-refresh not refreshing the data). The extension also does a poor job of indicating when items have been synced to the cloud, which can result in data loss in some circumstances.

Onboarding a new global administrator is also a difficult and fragile process. Due to how LastPass secures user Vaults, a new administrator with the "Reset Master Password" permission may not be able to reset the password on users who infrequently use LastPass (which are the users most likely to require a reset).

Additional features for MFA and SSO exist, but since the user experience is so bad, we have been deeply reluctant to integrate LastPass into our infrastructure.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

While I don't have direct experience with Enterprise-level administration in other password managers, I would strongly encourage choosing a different product over LastPass. The poor user experience will drive end users to avoid it when possible, making adoption and integration into your business much harder than it needs to be. I have used personal copies of 1Password, KeePass, and a few other solutions, which are far more intuitive for the end user.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Basic functionality exists. Users can generate complex passwords, save their passwords, and participate in security audits to improve their password strength.

Everything our team needs for password management.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it across the entire org. We have sub-folders/directories specific to each department and it works great. We can manage who has and can give access to our important information. We have a lead for each team/department who controls what their team needs access to. We have a general admin who monitors and sets these up. We haven't tried 1Pass for business, but that's because LastPass has always done what we need.

Pros and Cons

  • User and team management.
  • Security.
Edit
  • I think they should automatically require SMS recovery as part of account setup, but it's now part of our onboarding process to do so.
  • Because of reason above, one of our team members had to start an all new account. Luckily it was early in his tenure, but seems easily avoidable to be honest.

Likelihood to Recommend

LastPass allows us to save all of our passwords and only give access to people who need it. The user/group management has always worked well for us. I presume 1pass is comparable, but we haven't had a need to try since we started with LastPass. I feel like every business needs a password management solution, and we haven't looked back since we started.

SNB Review of LastPass Business

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

All users have the LastPass web add-on installed and utilize it for all business website logins. The Support Department also utilizes it to store client passwords for website accounts and logins. It keeps us from having to manually track passwords in a file format.

Pros and Cons

  • Has a very granular policy settings allowing for excellent control of the product.
  • Browser add-in works in all 3 browsers very well.
Edit
  • Support is only via email, disappointing you cannot speak with a live person.
  • Very inconsistent and disappointing behavior with linking personal vault accounts.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you would like to reduce the number of passwords a user has to maintain down to one, or if you have issues with users forgetting passwords. Also, if your company shares lots of logins, this is a better way to control and maintain those logins across multiple users.

"Easy and flexible password management for everyone"

What do you like best?

I like the password team sharing capabilities and the option to use private and work password in one application. Also the cross-platform availability of LastPass is a big plus.

What do you dislike?

The UI can be a bit overwhelming at first and when LastPass is deployed via your sysadmin, a good step-by-step on-boarding program might be useful. Especially when 2FA is introduced.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Please be sure to properly on-board your users. Especially when using two-factor (2FA) authentication. It can be frustrating for an end-user when you are unaware how to properly get started with 2FA.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Everyone was administering and archiving their passwords as they saw fit. We had situations were company passwords were saved in spreadsheets and sharing happend via mail, slack or Teams.

Keeps our company safe and secure

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

LastPass is used by multiple departments in our company. It is the best password management tool to be used by a company. I love that all of my passwords are managed in one place and I love that I do not have to remember them. I also love it is super easy to share passwords with co-workers. LastPass is a great tool to keep your business safe and organized.

Pros and Cons

  • Organize passwords in one place.
  • Ability to share passwords with other co-workers.
Edit
  • Sharing sometimes does not work with co-workers or is delayed.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have a lot of logins for a lot of accounts due to my role at the company and LastPass keeps all of my logins organized and safe in one place which I love. I love that I do not have to remember my passwords anymore and that I can have unique passwords for each of the accounts I use. LastPass is a great tool to keep a company's logins safe and secure.

LastPass: manage your enterprise passwords securely

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Used to manage and share passwords securely and to ensure complex passwords are enforced across the company.

Pros and Cons

  • Password management
  • Random password generation
Edit
  • Enterprise management of passwords.
  • More control over the password sharing capabilities.

Likelihood to Recommend

Does what it says on the box: manage passwords. A must for any company that values its information and wants to ensure strong passwords are used.

"Good Overall Experience"

What do you like best?

Remembering passwords is a full-time job these days. Every website requires such and they all have slightly different requirements so it is hard to keep up w/ them along with having to update them routinely. This helps streamline this process.

What do you dislike?

When I have to do a second validation after entering the password for a website it wants to always update to the validation being entered. It would be nice to have it retain that information too.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Makes it easier to keep up with logins and passwords personally
