Transcad, a software for transportation planning in GIS environment

What do you like best about TransCAD?

What I like most about Transcad is the ease of loading information and how intuitive the software is, especially for users who have knowledge of CAD and vector GIS.

What do you dislike about TransCAD?

It is handled with simple processes for obtaining the products linked to the analysis of networks and saturation of the transport network.

Recommendations to others considering TransCAD?

I have been using Transcad frequently for 15 years in urban mobility research in public transport in Latin American cities and it offers an excellent solution, its inclusion and implementation in monitoring projects is simple.

What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

The basic requirements of the software allow it to be deployed on basic, inexpensive or medium performance equipment, the license cost is affordable for small companies, universities and low income research groups.

What do you like best about TransCAD?

Algorithms, software architecture, GIS integration, compatibility with TransModeler (the micro-simulation package), graphics, and its programming capability.

What do you dislike about TransCAD?

Not Applicable. I cannot think of anything that I dislike.

Recommendations to others considering TransCAD?

Once you use TransCAD you will find the robustness of the software. The negative comments are usually by the ones who have not touched the software.

What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

It is truly a planning tool for transportation and even for certain urban planning problems (i.e., accessibility, walkability, connectivity, etc.). Moreover, an excellent tool for data analysis using its various functions.

Although aimed at transportation Transcad excels as a GIS. So powerful is its data structure that one can use matrix operations in the industry standard matrix model. None of the GIS software are capable of matrix modeling --- the foundation of mathematical modeling where vectors are involved ...

That it doesn't have a version decoupled from transportation planning and engineering (so that it can be sold as a standalone gis)

Way more powerful than any GIS. Comparable to Mathematica. Does it's job and more ...

Excellent tool for Travel Demand Forecast

What do you like best about TransCAD?

This is a very powerful software for its purpose, you can get down to small details. I attended the TransCAD Training in Newton, MA., and it helped me a great deal in getting to know many capabilities this software has.

What do you dislike about TransCAD?

Perhaps more active technical support would be nice. I ran into issues where I did not realize I had to go through different steps before being able to run a certain command.

Recommendations to others considering TransCAD?

Spend some time on your own to get familiar with the steps. Definitely need personal learning curve.

What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

Travel demands for a city.

Review of TransCAD

What do you like best about TransCAD?

The most beneficial part of TransCAD is that it seamless integrates with other GIS based software, which makes it so easy to edit networks.

What do you dislike about TransCAD?

In order to run the model, we have to run six different algorithms in sequential order

What problems is TransCAD solving and how is that benefiting you?

TransCAD helps to develop travel demand models by using the traditional four step modelling approach.
