Unanet is a complex system packed into easily learned modules. I have implemented Unanet in two different companies and have been pleased with both implementations. Once implemented, the system is great at keeping you and your team from messing up too badly. I love that it doesn't let us bill over funded values, it doesn't let us enter hours on a time card past the PoP of the CLIN, it doesn't let a direct employee charge to a job they aren't assigned to, it doesn't let my CEO accidentally make a journal entry when poking around in the general ledger. Financials built at the contract level that roll up to the company level are a breeze to review, and more details are only a click away. Once you learn one module it is easy to pick up the next module. One of my favorite features is Unanet's willingness to listen to its users though. I have submitted many suggestions in over the years and nearly all have been implemented.
The knowledge center that Unanet used to have was more user-friendly than the new version, though answers are still available if you are willing to look a little harder. The connection between users' planned leave and forecasting isn't well connected. Giving consultants a purchase order, a purchase order assignment, and a project assignment feels a little cumbersome. I would like a better way to see summaries of incoming mods that change project funding and PoPs , and somewhere to upload them versus the notes section (similar to the purchase order for funding flowing out.) Unanet isn't perfect, but I would choose it again and again over its competitors.
Take your time in the implementation to brainstorm how you want the product to function both now and in 5+ years. Simple pieces, such as project codes, can be meaningful and helpful with significant growth over time.
Moving away from Excel and into a true database has been a major time saver for my team. Instead of updating reports at the end of the month, we can now track in real time. This is huge when monitoring funding on projects that have a tight margin.
Ease of use. Even when you aren't sure about something, it is usually easy to figure out. And if not, the help desk is great!
I wish there were more report features. Also, some reports can only be printed. It would be nice if all reports were available in excel format
being able to track financials and locating errors if any with ease has been a big help.
Timesheets and Expense processing is easy for employees and contractors to complete and for managers to approve. As a CEO, my favorite part is how easy and intuitive it is to find information in the system and run my own reports using the Dashboard reports (real-time timesheet status, aging receivables, PTO accruals, income trends, etc.). I rarely have to seek assistance from my Accountant for routine actions. I've used other Accounting systems and this is by far the easiest to use and it addresses all the needs of a GovCon company.
It would be nice to have an integrated EVMS capability in Unanet. There are some reports available, but not enough to be EVMS certified.
Go for it - easy to implement and use and has robust GovCon capabilities.
We're a GovCon small business. Having an approved accounting system that handles all the GovCon requirements is essential, and the fact that it does it in an easy to use manner is a plus.
Unanet is easy to learn and flexible based on your business processes and structure.
It would be nice if the project budgets and the G/L budgets were more integrated.
Better timesheet compliance and accountability. Increased reporting capabilities and transparency for Project Managers. Faster and more efficient monthly closing process.
The timekeeping and accounting system are user-friendly. The software can perform multiple tasks simultaneously. There are various modules present in this software that will help complete your accounting process and produce accurate financial reports.
There are so many functions to learn that it can be overwhelming. I wish I could remember it all.
Unanet has excellent cost pool calculation functions that I like for Government Contract.
Unanet is a robust system that doesn't require a whole team to run. It allows small businesses to set up an accounting system that is adequate and audit ready without having to hire extra people.
I wish it were more affordable, but it is comparable to its competition and offers more usefulness within its modules.
Take your time and understand the requirements of maintaining a robust system such as Unanet.
We went from Quickbooks to Unanet and satisfied a pre-award audit with no problems. Unanet alone doesn't do this, but it does make it easier.
One of the best tools is Forecasting and the ability to run rate calculations. The all-in-one integrated system makes reconciling easy and accounting simple.
I don't like that the headers on reports don't freeze, I can't use Contracts Tab for Subcontracts we issue as a company. The PO system needs more work and there isnt inventory yet.
Compare to Deltek or Jameson and you will see why they are so good.
We have solved calculating rates and monitoring rates much easier with this system. DCAA acceptance is easy. Assisted in passing audits
I was able to teach myself and my staff how to use this software very quickly and easily.
Being a former programmer/developer, I did not like not having a data dictionary, per se, to build reports more easily.
Come on over as soon as you can!
Solving project management problems. Previously our project and program managers had no insight into the day-to-day actions against their projects in the accounting system, but with Unanet they are up to date!
For us, it's about process engineering, training, and support. Unanet's approach to implementation was simply far more tailored to us.
It took some time for them to roll out their integrated purchasing system, and there are some utilization reports that need to be modernized.
I would focus on ease of use, simplicity, process reengineering and training
We have made huge progress towards forecasting, using the PM tools as a sandbox, using program plans as an early warning reporting tool.
