Best Suicide Prevention Training ever!
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
I did the Safe Side Prevention training almost a year ago and I have to say it's one of the best suicide prevention trainings I have ever done. They continue to have monthly "office hours" to discuss topics further and send follow-up emails with great reminders and tips weekly. SafeSide Prevention training went beyond just recognizing signs and symptoms, but how to actually talk to someone who may be contemplating suicide or has made attempts.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
Some emails come with opening remarks from other users but when you click to read more it doesn't open. And sadly, I'm not able to attend the office hours as much as I would have liked to.
What problems is SafeSide Prevention solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am on our local Suicide Prevention Coaltion and joined after losing my 24 year old son to suicide over 5 1/2 years ago. I work with families regularly in my professional work and have attended other suicide prevention trainings which were mainly about recognizing the signs. SafeSide went way beyond this...not a one and done training. Compassion and passion seem to be the driving force in helping people help others who may be contemplating suicide. Understanding the signs is important, but understanding how to talk with someone without making them feel judged or stigmatized and getting them professional help is just as important. I love that SafeSide is teaching professionals, para-professionals, and anyone willing to learn how to break down barriers. I wish I had taken this several years earlier.

Genuine collaboration with people with lived experience
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
SafeSide has successfully embedded a genuinely collaborative, compassionate, recovery-oriented approach to working with people with suicide concerns into a systematic, evidence-based framework. I wish this approach had been taken when I was in clinical care as a result of my own suicidal crisis; I believe it would have set me on a path to recovery much sooner.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
It could be more explicitly trauma-informed in order to promote genuine "safety" for people with lived experience who have experienced stigma and discrimination within conventional clinical services. These people have understandably low levels of institutional trust that creates barriers to building trust and rapport with health professionals, regardless of the approach taken.
What problems is SafeSide Prevention solving and how is that benefiting you?
I haven't used SafeSide in a professional setting.

SafeSide Prevention is where it's at!
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
SafeSide's content and its people are amazing. The support we receive and the connections that have been made are improving our ability to provide a service that is truly "beyond safety". We already held the values, many parts of the knowledge, and some of the skills, but the SafeSide Framework brings it all together, and helps us to identify what we are doing well and where we need to keep building. The new "Community Of Practice" puts me in touch with others from many parts of the globe who are working towards the same goals that we are. It is so wonderful to be a part of such an inspiring, comprehensive and meaningful endeavour.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
The only thing that I wish we could do would be to have the video training customizable to our specific location and population. I feel that this would aid our staff to better incorporate the concepts and practices. However, I and our team here are able to use program-specific situations to integrate the messages, and will be able to do this even more with time, practice, and support from the SafeSide team.
Recommendations to others considering SafeSide Prevention?
Standardization of how we formulate suicide risk, and thus how we plan for safety is going to be great. We have a long-term goal of seeing this approach used throughout our Region and hopefully our Province, and the language, concepts and tools will greatly aid in that goal. When we are all speaking the same language, and working towards the same goals, our work becomes manageable, and even more hopeful.

In Southern DHB, SafeSide provides a Safe Framework for all person centered CARE
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
The reliability of the training as it should be yet provides flexibility to be applied to such a variety of clinical settings in a way that best suits the person receiving care and providing it.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
Because I like to use it for ALL risk, the title SS Framework for Suicide Safer Care feels limiting. The Suicide component is very important but for those not able to be so flexible, they find it hard to get past it being the 'suicide framework'.
Recommendations to others considering SafeSide Prevention?
Consistency of care using clear assessment and best practice tips and then responses that are recovery focused for the person and their extended support people.
What problems is SafeSide Prevention solving and how is that benefiting you?
I think it has allowed us to have 'risk assessment' imbedded in all responses and not separated out.

Efficient and sustainable way to support suicide prevention in youth services
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
The SafeSide Framework includes best practices in suicide risk assessment and intervention. The Framework is paired with a workforce development approach called InPlace Learning that is applicable to a variety of roles and is generalizable across settings. Because InPlace Learning is video-based, it is an efficient, consistent, and sustainable way to deliver expert support on the topic of suicide prevention to large numbers of staff. The training provides both instruction and skills-demonstration videos that are relevant and engaging. But the best part of SafeSide Prevention is that you get access to a dedicated and passionate team that will go above and beyond to partner with you throughout all stages of implementation.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
Because the SafeSide Framework and InPlace Learning are intended to have broad applicability and impact, some staff in very specific roles may struggle to see where they fit or may be unable to transfer learnings from the training to practice. For some roles, additional coaching and supervision may be required.
What problems is SafeSide Prevention solving and how is that benefiting you?
SafeSide has helped to create a universal language for suicide assessment, prevention, and intervention across a large system of care. It has increased staff self-efficacy in an area that can at times feel scary; especially for non-clinical staff who may have limited training related to suicide. The Framework, coupled with evidence-informed mini-interventions, helps to ensure a consistent standard of care that is offered to all youth and families we serve. Lastly, the InPlace Learning video-based method has helped to reduce barriers related to training staff across a large geographic footprint.

Wonderful training!
What do you like best about SafeSide Prevention?
My staff felt it is was the most usable information they've receved in a training that can actually be applied from that moment on.The presenters are personable and highly organized. The framework makes sense and the visual helps us to gather the pieces in a reasonable way.
What do you dislike about SafeSide Prevention?
Including a person with lived experience helps to make this work so much more authentic and meaningful.
Recommendations to others considering SafeSide Prevention?
Having access to a written report template for practice at time of training and for future use
What problems is SafeSide Prevention solving and how is that benefiting you?
This model gives us common language and a universal framework to assess suicidal concerns and/or other similar risk areas.
