Petrel is primarily designed for Windows operating systems. While there are workarounds available, it may not offer the same level of native compatibility and performance on other operating systems like macOS or Linux. This limited platform compatibility may disadvantage users who prefer or require alternative operating systems.

The object tree organization in Petrel is intuitive and user-friendly. Easy to handle data across multiple UTM zones by allowing geodesic coordinates. It is capable of easily visualizing both 2D and 3D seismic data, processing it, and interpreting it by picking horizons, drawing faults and even using seismic attributes makes it a great tool. It also allowed me to handle datasets across the entire basin.

When importing files from external sources, the format selection is often confusing and doesn't seem as flexible as competitors. Besides, it is hard to handle large well data sets with multiple well names and UWIs due to the lack of a database link.

Petrel is a complete tool, it can help with almost all of the areas needed for oil exploration. From well log interpretation to seismic processing and interpretation. The mathematics involved in all the simulation processes is really accurate so the geological models are extremely detailed, which allows us to grow apart from the usual layer cake stratigraphic models.

It has some many features in the main window that makes it a little overwhelming for new users when they don't have experience. The main interface is not the most friendly and requires several weeks of practice to have a certain skill level.

Get to know all its features for an improved experience for reservoir characterization. If you are a new user try to spend enough time to learn all of its features.
