Review Summary

Particle is a popular IoT platform praised for its ease of use, especially for beginners. Users appreciate its robust developer community, comprehensive documentation, and fast prototyping capabilities. The platform allows for quick deployment of connected devices with over-the-air updates. However, some users report connectivity issues, particularly with cellular networks, and concerns about pricing for large-scale deployments. While the platform is ideal for rapid development and testing, users who need advanced features or want to use alternative hardware or programming languages may find it limiting.

Pros

  • Particle provides an easy and rapid way to develop and deploy IoT products.
  • Its cloud services and dashboards offer valuable features for managing IoT fleets.
  • Excellent documentation and support for developers are crucial for any platform.

Cons

  • Particle's pricing can be expensive, especially when scaling up large fleets of IoT devices.
  • Deprecation of features like mesh networking and older hardware products can be frustrating for users.
  • Customer service is reported to be unreliable and unresponsive to open tickets.

"Easy to deploy and fast"
What do you like best about Particle?

the easy to deploy, the easy to change from devices and driver free, the very helpfull on site for each device.

What do you dislike about Particle?

i think it was a really helpfull and wise about the xenon network. i think this should be still available.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

take a look at libraries, there are many examples to short time on developtment, and deploy at first with an argon, then when finish move to a boron to save data usage.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

really, i think many things are already done, but sometimes a few devices that are rare or doesnt complete the spectatives, i am deploying a CO2 reader that i could position on a mask. it is working very well, also integrate with ifttt to log data on google spreadsheet.

"one of the simplest ways to get into IoT dev"
What do you like best about Particle?

I think that they make the hardware part of doing IoT dev less painful. I don't have a hardware background so programming firmware isn't something I have much experience with. I like that provisioning a new particle device is super easy and that writing firmware and getting it sync'd to your device is simple and can be done over wifi or cellular instead of having to connect with USB.

What do you dislike about Particle?

I think it would be nice if I could use the particle ecosystem with more kinds of IoT devices. Their software is geared toward Particle devices which isn't surprising, but it would be nice to use other kinds of hardware with their studio / device management tools. They used to support Rasbberry Pi development but I believe mostly discontinued support for that.

Recommendations to others considering Particle:

I would start with Particle, especially if you're an IoT novice because it's a great way to learn. They have strong documentation and good examples to follow.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

Particle was one of my first experiences in doing programming with IoT devices and it's one I keep coming back to because of how easy their software is to use. I own several particle devices that I've purchased over the last few years.

What do you dislike about Particle?

I'd like the console to have some additional features for searching for devices.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

Developing low-cost, high-value tools for the commercial HVAC industry. Particle has enabled me to develop both highly valued multi-point equipment monitoring solutions as well as low-cost targeted devices for monitoring critical environmental parameters.

"IoT for Hobbyist to Commercial"
What do you like best about Particle?

I switched to Particle because of the built-in connectivity. I am a novice at microcontrollers, so anything I can do to simplify the process is well worth it. When I received my first wi-fi Particle (a Photon), and again later when I bought my first cellular unit (an Electron), I was overwhelmed at how quickly the claim and communicate process worked. Following through with Variables, Functions, Publish, and Subscribe makes the process of exposing the Particle and controlling it extraordinarily simple. Add OTA flashing and, well, what’s not to like?

What do you dislike about Particle?

I struggle a little with getting definitive information about specific functions. The Reference documents and Tutorials are okay, and the Community certainly helps, but I’d really like to be able to dig into a comprehensive reference document that provides accurate and complete information about how certain functions and models operate.

What problems is Particle solving and how is that benefiting you?

I’m developing a service for business owners which allows me to remotely control a part of their facility. The businesses for which I’ve piloted my service have been very enthusiastic about it. Having a cellular interface means that I don’t have to rely on the business for any part of the connectivity. In an earlier version, I was relying on the owners’ wi-fi, which led to a number of “failures” that I eventually traced to changes they’d made to their own wi-fi.
