It allows us to stay home, on site site surveys are not replaceable yet when you trully care about quality and exact placement, but if you can allow a 15-20% error rate and adding a few extra APs just in case predictive site surveys are good enough and with Ekahau you can do both, it has a huge number of AP models and brands on it and it can be hugely customizable(as long as you have a good PC, it's not easy on the RAM or CPU) I'll love to do onsite site surveys after this covid nightmare is over but for now it is a great tool for predictive site surveys.
The UI difference between MacOSX and Windows is annoying, I know it isn't the same OS and it has different shortcuts, but some times it feels too different.
The included examples are a great way to get you started, even better than the documentation.
For now doing predictive site surveys, hopefully soon doing on-site site surveys.
It's pretty intuitive to use. When we onboard new team members our first step is to teach them how to do a site survey and a wireless design with Ekahau(site surveys will have to wait until the pandemic is over) and besides being a great tool overall it is an amazing tool for teaching and learning wireless.
It is really expensive and unnecessarily heavy, I have taught my nephew a little wireless design since he is almost ready for college and there is no option for a student version and I like that I can do design and surveys in the same program, it would be even better if a lighter version allowed you to survey in a less powerful PC, it's not even about the cost, fewer resources mean better battery life.
It is a great tool but very expensive, only buy this if you have a client that will pay more for your services.
Wireless designs, site surveys, and validation, it is the best tool so far but eyePA is getting closer.
The best site surveys are done with Ekahau at the moment. It works really well if your computer can support it and the GPS support is an amazing feature when you are on a car, also when doing designs allows you a way to create really good designs in a moderate amount of time.
Ekahau marketing tries really hard to justify the sidekick as a necessary addon and although the sidekick is a good tool being the only adapter that works in MacOSX is really a bummer giving us the feeling that they can design a driver but choose not to because they want to drive sales of the sidekick up. Sometimes we don't really care that much about the price but using a sidekick on top of a car is just a bad idea so we end up using a Windows machine just to use the other adapters. We can have a network nic fall and even if it gets destroyed we can use another one on the other side if a sidekick falls it can hurt someone.
Sadly it is better to use it on Windows than on MacOSX
Site surveys before the pandemic and wireless designs
There is no real competitor at the moment when dealing with heatmapping a wireless network in a site survey. Alternatives like Air Magnet are nowhere near for now because of the stability of the program.
You need to know and understand Ekahau if you are a Wireless profesional even if you don't use it.
Memory utilization in version 10 increased in a big way, so when I only need a site survey I prefer to stay at version 9 since there is not a really big difference, my computer can run that without issues but running that in a surface pro is not as easy as before and some times not doable at all. Because of that, we need to have version 9 and version 10 at our PCs.
You can't use Ekahau Nics in MacOSX only the sidekick and bringing a sidekick is not always the best idea, so you need another PC with windows or install Windows natively if you plan to use Ekahay survey functions.
If you are a Wireless engineer you need to understand this, even if you don't use it or need to use it now.
Wireless site surveys and predictive designs.
You can first walk the area if you don't have a measuring tool with you and later add the correct measurement this will not affect your data at all. The predictive design supports all the access points I work with. They release frequent updates keeping up with the latest models and technologies
Nothing, I use this in almost every project I have and this makes my job easier
The monthly webinars are a must see resource for every Wi-Fi professional
Creating Wi-Fi designs and verifying them.
It's easy to use as long as you know what you are doing. Lots of options for interferers, wall types, access points and area options available.
Ekahau Cloud, we don't need it and we'll never use it but is part of the program now and not an optional feature to install.
If you bind your license to an external network card you can use the license in several computers as long as you connect the card
Wifi Designs are quite easy to do with this tool if you know RF.
Ekahau is an industry-standard for Wi-Fi planning and surveying. It provides an easy-to-use interface and works great with Ekahau Sidekick.
The recent price increases have been quite steep, so it might take a little while proving the value to your management;-)
It is a huge time saver and scanning performance of Ekahau Sidekick (the hardware) is also great.
As long as you know how to walk a map you can do a Wireless site survey, no need to understand a whole lot, you just walk, click on the tool and as soon you are done walking the area someone with more experience in RF can review it. This makes this a great tool to train new engineers.
Resource utilization went up significantly in version 10.
Walk with more than one RF adapter for better results.
Wifi site surveys, analysis and design of wifi networks
You can have multiple versions installed in Windows and Mac with the same license as long as you have it bonded to an external network card where the license is installed.
Good predictive support for a good array of vendors and Access point models.
No support for NIC-300 on MacOSX
No retrocompatibility for new version designs even if you don't use the new features
It's expensive but worth it if you need to have a large wireless deployment

Both the ability to share and collaborate with colleagues, as well as the granularity of the materials.
Sometimes while mapping out floorplans, the software will randomly crash and anything not saved is lost. I've gotten in the habit of saving my work about every five minutes due to this. An auto save feature would be nice.
Get the sidekick with Ekahau Pro. It's expensive, but well worth the money. If you want to do any form of site survey, it's definitely the way to go. My only regret is waiting so long to get it. I designed wireless locations for four hospitals without it, and it took far longer than it would have if I had Ekahau Pro. From a cost perspective, it will pay for itself with the time you will save on your design.
I use Ekahau Pro to design access point locations for wireless networks. I'm able to save the files on my Ekahau Sidekick, take it with me on site, and perform a site survey as well once everything is in place. No need for a laptop as I'm able to use their app on my ipad and walk around. The license is stored on the sidekick, so i'm able to use the software on multiple devices with a single license.
